What has changed since the change of government?

Base rate
6.255.50%
25 Feb 2026 → 27 Oct 2026
−0.75 ppsince the change of government
Same period before: −0.25 pp

The latest figure compared with the value when the new government took office – and, for comparison, how the indicator moved over the same length of time before the change. This is a short period: the indicators are also strongly driven by the world economy, earlier decisions and seasonal effects, so changes cannot be attributed to the new government alone.

About this indicator

The base rate is the central bank's main tool against inflation: a higher rate makes borrowing more expensive and usually strengthens the forint. In autumn 2022 the MNB raised the base rate to 13%, the highest in the EU.

The latest figure (27 Oct 2026) is 5.50%, under the Magyar Péter government. The series goes back to 1987; the highest value was 28.00% (1 Feb 1995) and the lowest 0.60% (22 Jul 2020).
