Diesel price
What has changed since the change of government?
The latest figure compared with the value when the new government took office – and, for comparison, how the indicator moved over the same length of time before the change. This is a short period: the indicators are also strongly driven by the world economy, earlier decisions and seasonal effects, so changes cannot be attributed to the new government alone.
Regulation and key events
- 15 Nov 2021 – 6 Dec 2022Price cap: 480 HUF per litre
Regulated price: petrol (95) and diesel could cost at most 480 HUF per litre. Planned for three months, it was extended several times and abolished with immediate effect at 23:00 on 6 December 2022 amid fuel shortages, after which prices jumped from 480 to over 650 HUF within a week.
- 27 May 2022Hungarian plates only
From 27 May 2022 only Hungarian-registered vehicles could fill up at the capped price. Because of such restrictions, the average price actually paid rose above the 480 HUF cap in the second half of 2022.
- 10 Mar 2026 – 27 Jun 2026Protected price: 615 HUF per litre
Protected price: petrol (95) could cost at most 595 HUF and diesel 615 HUF per litre. The Orbán government introduced it from 10 March 2026 when oil prices spiked because of the Middle East conflict. A law passed by Parliament ended it from 27 June 2026, after market prices had fallen below the cap.
Hungary and its neighbours
Latest weekly data (19 Oct 2026), converted at 363.40 HUF/€. The last column shows the price change since the change of government, measured in euros (so exchange-rate moves don't distort it) – if neighbours moved similarly, the change is mostly down to world markets.
