−2.0 ppsince the change of government

The latest figure compared with the value when the new government took office – and, for comparison, how the indicator moved over the same length of time before the change. This is a short period: the indicators are also strongly driven by the world economy, earlier decisions and seasonal effects, so changes cannot be attributed to the new government alone.

About this indicator

The debt ratio compares total government debt with the economy's annual output. The Maastricht criterion caps it at 60%. In Hungary the ratio rose from 55% to above 80% between 2002 and 2010 and has fluctuated between 65% and 80% since.

The latest figure (Q2 2026) is 75.6%, under the Magyar Péter government. The series goes back to 1995; the highest value was 83.9% (Q4 1995) and the lowest 52.2% (Q2 2001).
